Spantech CEO Dick Lucas and Engineer Peter Connolly have lent their combined experience to the teams planning to undertake the 2017 Kokoda Challenge.
Why is their advice worth listening to? Firstly, both Peter and Dick have completed the 96 km trek twice. More astonishingly, they last completed it when the were in their seventies. They then followed up this amazing feat by walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, walking alongside the kids from the Kokoda Youth Foundation.
Dick and Peter have condensed over five years of hard slog trekking experience into this informative three-minute video that we hope will inspire you to have a go too.
The Kokoda Challenge should definitely be on your bucket list. It is amongst the toughest team endurance event in Australia: 96km of winding tracks through the Gold Coast hinterland, 5,000m of vertical elevation to climb (and descend!) and 13 checkpoints to get through.
Kokoda Youth Foundation
The annual event raises money for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. The Kokoda Youth Foundation is a registered charity founded in July 2004 by Vietnam veteran Doug Henderson OAM. Doug was inspired to start the Foundation after hearing about the battle of the Kokoda Track and the Pacific Campaign.
The Foundation’s main initiative is the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP). The comprehensive 14-month program involves physical training and mentoring, participation in two of our Kokoda Challenge events, earning the chance to travel to PNG to either walk the Kokoda Track or visit the coastal villages and memorials, and culminating in 6 months of community service.
