Design and construct a multi-purpose shade structure featuring coloured concrete slab |
Ormeau State School is in the rapidly growing South East corner of Queensland. Recent development at the school led to a loss of some under covered play areas. The school was looking for an all weather solution, while maintaining the open modern feel of the school.
The completed shade structure is bordered by existing walkways linking the building to other school buildings.
Its high roof, open at one end, allows ambient light and maximum airflow. The enclosed end features a free-spanning end wall which protects the structure from prevailing weather and direct sunlight.
A concrete octagon feature of the original space was maintained and incorporated into the finished design, providing inspiration for the "pottery" coloured concrete slab and surrounding pavers.
A new artificial grassed area compliments the low maintenance structure.
At the first full school assembly in the new building, Principal Heather Andrew named the new structure "The Arch".
