Copper Concentrate Bulk Storage and Handling Facility
Port Kembla, NSW
May 2006 |
| Scope: |
Design and construct 40,000 tonne facility with side loading capabilities and openings allowing for material handling equipment |
Spantech was contracted by Hyrock Pty Ltd to design and construct a 40,000 tonne copper concentrate bulk storage facility at Port Kembla.
The building is 40 x 100 metres comprising buttressed tilt slab walls and concrete slab.
Spantech used it's 370 Series panel to achieve a 40 metre clear span. With eaves, each roof panel is 45 metres wide making it the widest roof Spantech has constructed.
The simple, cost effective design overcame poor soil conditions by installing six metre deep screw piles to meet the rock.
Structural steel was treated to protect it from reacting with the copper concentrate, but the Spantech 370 Series Panel made from Bluescope Steel's Colorbond® (used for the roof and end walls) did not require any additional protection.
Spantech's design incorporates openings and fixtures to accommodate material handling conveyors and hoppers.
The project was completed in less than six months and commissioned on 27 May 2006.
