Sports and Assembly Hall
20m x 34m
Wooloowin, Qld
2008

Scope: Construct a multi-purpose sports and assembly hall, with stage and general learning area (GLA)

The EC Foster Pavilion is located at Holy Cross Primary School, Wooloowin, Queensland.

Named after a benefactor, the impressive facility includes an enclosed Covered Area creating a sports and assembly hall, attached General Learning Area classroom and attendant works.

The airy spaciousness and ample height allow for a range of sports. The design by Architects Fairweather Proberts of Brisbane includes bold lines and the use of false columns set at a slope up to the eave lines of the main roof. The main structural members are exposed galvanized steel. Walls include blockwork, colorbond metal and express panel cladding. These are supplemented with the use of opaque polycarbonate paneling in the gable ends and in a random chequer pattern on the upper areas of the side walls.

Spantech’s contract included the design and construction of the entire facility. The main covered area is 20 meters wide and 34 meters long and is enclosed on all 4 sides. A Spantech arched roof extends out from the main columns to the eave lines and rises to 8.2 meters at the centre. The attached GLA of approximately 80 square meters has splayed walls and opens onto the main hall. Attendant works include ramps, stairs and paths with awning roofs, plus necessary services.

Structural Engineering was by Benard Connolly and Partners. A Vierendeel truss with props taken back into the splayed side walls of the GLA allowed for the deletion of one main column to create an effective proscenium at the interface between the main hall and the GLA. The main arch is fully self supporting and provides a smooth interior absent of any purlins or trusses.

The roof of the GLA and the various awnings are Spantech flat panels allowing free spans and again clean internal lines.  Both the arch and flat panels are Spantech 300 series roll-formed on site from AZ 150, G300, 1.0mm BMT single sided coil steel.
