The Kokoda Challenge
12 Jan 2012
Gold Coast, Australia
Kim's 3 Rick's Gutsy Effort
In June 2011, in the middle of the wettest winter in memory, 200 teams lined up for an endurance event designed to replicate the original Kokoda Track. The 96km course that snakes through the rugged Gold Coast hinterland is hailed as Australia's toughest endurance event and the weather promised to make this one even tougher.
Spantech and a group of suppliers and subcontractors sponsored a team. The four team members who bravely accepted the grueling challenge included Dick Lucas, Spantech CEO, Spantech Construction Manager Rick Lucas and his wife Kim, and family friend Richard Goldsworthy from Victoria. The team was appropriately named team "Kim's 3 Ricks".
After 24 hours of non-stop rain, mud, slips, falls, blisters and numerous aches and pains, Rick, Kim and Richard were forced to retire at the 63km mark. It was a great effort to make it so far.
Dick crossed the finish line ten hours later. After 96 am and 34 hours of hard slog, 67 year old Dick vowed it was his first and last Challenge.

Thanks to the support of many of Spantech's suppliers and subcontractors, the team raised $6,000 support local teenagers to gain a brighter future for themselves and their families through The Kokoda Challenge Youth Program.
Bigger in 2012
The 2012 Kokoda Challenge will be in July. This year Spantech will enter two teams (because it is a race). Dick is lining up again - amazing! Rick and Kim are back too.
Fund raising has already started with $700 raised at the annual Spantech Christmas party. Watch this space to see how you can support the team's fund raising efforts.
Registration for the Gold Coast 2012 Challenge opens at 6:00am on Feb. 1 2012. Teams should get ready to enter and start to get fit now!

Building the Education Revolution with Spantech
30 November 2010
Gold Coast, Australia
Spantech began working with a number of schools in 2009 to design facilities under the Building the Education Revolution (BER) stimulus package funded by the Australian Government.
Within twelve months Spantech had designed and constructed:
All projects were delivered on schedule and within budget.
All of the multipurpose halls, sports court shade structures and covered outdoor learning areas (COLAs) feature the distinctive distinctive Spantech curved roofing system.
With this unique construction system suited to wide span buildings, a track record of successful education projects and a range of design options for schools, Spantech was well placed to help schools get the most from their allocated funding. All the schools that Spantech has worked with have been extremely happy with the excellent value for money and speedy completion of their projects.
Spantech continues to work with Architects and schools to design projects which qualify for funding under the BER guidelines, based on Spantech's successful designs:
Spantech's in-house design team helped Architects meet the strict deadlines for BER projects and provide the engineering solutions which maximised the efficiencies of the Spantech System.

The buildings performed beyond expectations, exceeding the NATO standards. The Australian Department of Defence awarded Spantech a number of key defence projects and now specifies the Spantech system for many of their earth-covered buildings.
